First off, if you haven’t seen Begin Again, I suggest it. Pour yourself a nice glass of wine, sometime on a Sunday night, when the weekend is over and you’re about to start a new one; sometime when you have the rest of the night to yourself, and all the emails, text messages, to-do lists, and life-things can wait a little bit to hear from you. Maybe at the end of this week, even.
Begin Again is one of those cute, inspirational films about people down on their luck. Ordinary people, facing the ordinary life crisis things that people have faced since the beginning of time, and that maybe right now you’re facing. At the same time, it’s also about extraordinary people. It’s an easy film to like, and that’s not a bad thing.
It comes with surprising performances. Who the hell knew Keira Knightley could sing? I sure didn’t. I kept watching the screen thinking, No way she’s really singing. Is she really singing??
I guess sometimes your brain doesn’t want to accept that people can be that talented. It seems sometimes that half the actors and actresses out there have this secret, amazing ability to sing (and probably everything else as well).
I’m probably biased, because the songs Keira sings have this sweet, indie sort of feel to them, but I enjoyed the music as well. And the other surprise? Adam Levine plays her boyfriend, though not in many scenes. I can’t really say that I have listened to much of his music, but I did enjoy it when he sang ‘Lost Stars’ in the acoustic version.
